Northern growing country

Bowen's season fills a shed, and then some

Bowen is tomatoes, capsicums and mangoes, and a winter vegetable district that packs hard for a few months and then goes quiet. Storage here follows the crop: cartons, pallets, irrigation fittings and chemicals that have to be off the packing floor when the auditors come through.

Container for Bowen packing-shed overflow

Packing floors that run out of corners

At harvest a packing shed is already full of bins, forklifts and people. Cartons and labels still have to stay dry and away from vermin, and a grower does not want to pour a slab for a need that shrinks when picking stops. A container beside the shed does that without becoming a building. Inland, Collinsville and the mines add contractor work passing through. In town, and out at Queens Beach, residents want the boat and the caravan gear somewhere the salt will not eat as fast as a light shed.

Bowen, Queens Beach, Merinda, Gumlu and Guthalungra are 4805. Collinsville is 4804. Delta and the country between sit on those same northern roads.

Farms built for semis, yards full of bins

Most horticulture places around Bowen already take semi-trailers, so gates, hardstand and turning circles are usually kind to us. The awkward day is harvest, when the yard is a moving puzzle of trucks and pickers and somebody has to point at a landing spot that will still be there at dawn. Irrigated ground, wash-down bays and the lanes near dams can stay soft even when the district looks dry. In the wet, when many farms are between crops, the question is which crossing is actually open.

Town blocks in Bowen are famously flat and wide. The check is low trees and wires at the pad, not a fight for width.

End of the northern run from The Leap

Bowen is as far north as this run from Mackay goes. The container starts at The Leap: you can look at it on a weekday or Saturday morning, or take the serial photographs, and then it joins a northbound truck. The day follows that truck's plan and what is actually in the yard.

A forty-footer swallows flat-packed cartons and pallets and keeps them drier than an open-sided bay. Fittings and tools usually fit a twenty. Chemical storage is separate from the packing floor — buyers' audit schemes expect that — so a bunded, ventilated unit is the one to ask for, with the products named. A shut steel box in the Bowen sun is an oven by early afternoon. Shade, vents or insulation matter if anything inside minds the heat. The guide below ranks those options without pretending a coat of paint is enough.

Abbot Point, up the coast, draws contractors through town. The store they usually want is on a farm or a rented yard at Merinda, not inside the port gate. Say if Bowen is only a pause before the unit goes further, because a box you have already cut openings in is a poor candidate for another lift onto a lease.

Cartons and labels are happy in a sound cargo-worthy shell. Fertiliser and anything that minds heat are not happy in a closed box in full sun, even when the steel is doing its job against rain. If the shed can shade the roof, use that corner. If it cannot, spend on vents before you spend on lining. The desk would rather tell you that than sell a fit-out a season of cartons does not need.

Harvest, heat, chemicals

Can I take a container just for picking and send it back?

Yes. That suits carton overflow that disappears when the season does. If the space is needed every year, owning one usually costs less across a few seasons.

Where should farm chemicals sit?

Away from packing and produce, in a bunded ventilated unit matched to what you store. It contains a spill and it is what the audit is looking for.

Merinda and Gumlu as well as town?

Yes. Tell us about soft irrigated ground or a yard that will be mid-harvest, so the landing spot is agreed with whoever runs the shed.
