A shipping container in full tropical sun can run hotter inside than out by the middle of the afternoon. If people work in it, or the contents mind heat, that's a problem you fix before you fill it — not after.
Steel conducts heat, and a sealed container has no thermal mass to slow it down. Park one in the open at Paget or on a laydown out past Moranbah, and by 2pm in February the inside is an oven — comfortably over the outside air temperature, and hot enough to matter for anyone working in it, for chemical with a rated storage temperature, and for anything that degrades in heat. This is a separate problem from the wet-season condensation we cover in getting a container through a Mackay wet; here we're talking about heat, and how to get rid of it.
Before you spend a dollar on insulation, deal with the air and the sun, because between them they do about half the job for almost nothing.
Cross-flow ventilation. A sealed box traps hot air with nowhere to go. Vents high on both end walls, or a couple of whirlybirds on the roof drawing off the hottest air near the ceiling, let the heat escape and pull cooler air through. Passive wall louvres cost little, have no moving parts, and are the single most cost-effective thing you can do. Ask for them fitted before delivery rather than cutting them in afterwards.
Roof colour and shade. A dark roof in tropical sun is a hotplate. A light-coloured roof, or a reflective heat-barrier coating, swings the internal temperature noticeably for the price of a few litres of paint. Better again is a separate shade structure — a simple skillion roof or even a shade sail a hand's breadth above the container roof — which stops the sun hitting the steel at all and lets air move through the gap. On a lot of Bowen Basin crib rooms and workshop containers, a light roof plus a shade structure plus vents is the whole solution and no lining goes in at all.
Insulation is where the internal-space and budget trade-offs live. Every option steals some width or headroom, which is why a lot of people lining a container buy a high cube to start with. Here's the honest ranking.
Spray polyurethane foam. The best performer and the one that handles tropical humidity best, because it seals as it insulates — closed-cell foam is its own vapour barrier, so it kills the condensation problem at the same time. Sprayed straight onto the inside of the walls and roof it's continuous, with no gaps for heat or moisture to sneak through, and it only takes 40–50mm to do a lot. It's the dearest option and it's a specialist job, but for a crib room, an office or anything habitable in this climate it's usually the right answer.
Rigid foam board (PIR/polystyrene) behind battens. Sheets of rigid board fixed to timber or steel battens, then lined over with ply or sheet. Good thermal performance, more DIY-friendly than spray foam, but you have to seal the joints and the batten line properly or you get condensation tracking behind the lining — which in the tropics is a real risk, not a theoretical one. Costs you the batten depth plus the board off each wall.
Batts between battens. The cheapest framed option and a familiar one, but the one to be most careful with here. Bulk insulation only works dry, and in a humid sealed box any moisture that reaches the batt stays there and kills its performance — and can start rot in the framing. If you go this way, a proper vapour barrier and ventilation aren't optional. Fine for a dry inland shed; the riskiest choice on the coast.
Reflective foil / bubble-wrap air-cell. Thin, cheap, and easy to fit, and it earns its keep against radiant heat — the sun's heat radiating off the roof — which is exactly the tropical problem. It does little against conducted heat on its own, so it's best thought of as a first layer or a low-cost improvement for a storage container, not a substitute for real insulation in something habitable. Its big advantage is that it barely eats any internal space.
You don't insulate a hay shed the way you insulate a site office. Roughly:
Plain storage — tools, machinery parts, farm gear: vents and a light roof are usually enough. The gear doesn't care about 35°C, it cares about damp, and that's a ventilation job.
Temperature-sensitive storage — chemical with a rated storage range, anything that degrades or pressurises in heat: shade, vents and a reflective layer at minimum, and think hard about where the container sits. A dangerous-goods unit full of drums in full sun is a genuine hazard, not just an inconvenience.
Workshops and crib rooms where people spend the day: rigid board or spray foam, cross-flow ventilation, a light roof, and realistically a fan or air-conditioning as well — insulation makes cooling affordable rather than replacing it.
Anything habitable — a cabin, an office someone lives out of, a granny flat: spray foam is the tropical default, in a high cube so the lining doesn't cost you your headroom. There's more on the approval side of that in container homes and cabins in the Mackay and Whitsundays region.
