Further west

Clermont is a long haul, and the track decides it

Clermont is a long way inland from Mackay, one of central Queensland's older towns, and the work rests on cattle, cropping and coal. A container out here is often the only secure store that does not depend on a hardware run of several hours.

Container staged in Mackay for a Clermont station

Stations, cropping, and crews who are only here for the contract

Grazing holdings use a container for fencing materials, vet supplies, pumps, spare parts and tools, because the alternative is a long drive for a single fitting. Cropping country — sorghum, chickpeas, wheat — wants seed, chemical and machinery parts through the season. Mining and mine services are the third stream: laydown, a crib, an office, delivered well off the highway.

The town was moved to higher ground after the 1916 flood, and people here do not need a lecture about low country. Clermont is 4721. Capella, south on the Peak Downs Highway, is 4723. Kilcummin is 4721 as well.

Grids, creek crossings, and soil that changes its mind

These deliveries are long hauls, run with the Bowen Basin work rather than as a one-off adventure. Station access means a gravel or dirt track, sometimes a long one, with grids, gates and creek crossings. A grid that takes a ute may not take a loaded truck. A crossing that is dry most of the year may not be open after rain. Tell us about all of them before the route is drawn.

Much of the district is black soil: rock-hard when dry, impassable when wet. That hits both the drive in and the pad. A container set straight onto that clay can twist as the ground swells and shrinks, until the doors bind. Solid supports and a gravel pad are worth the trouble. If there has been rain, the roads are checked before the truck leaves Mackay rather than discovered the hard way.

Shown at The Leap, then hauled west

What you are shown on the ground at The Leap, or in serial photographs, is what is chained on for the trip to Clermont. Because the kilometres are a larger share of the cost than they are in town, some station orders take two units on the one truck so the journey counts. Ask for both figures if that might be you. Freight is quoted with the container for the property; there is no separate rate card for the highway.

Stations often choose a forty-footer simply because it is the most storage per trip. A twenty suits an outstation or the yards. A crib or a remote office wants the headroom of a high cube, and in a western summer insulation is close to essential, not a luxury. Chemicals and fuels, on a farm or a lease, belong in a dangerous-goods unit matched to the class. Contractors on a fixed term usually hire, and the unit goes back when the work finishes. A station store is almost always a purchase. As-is stock can hold steel, wire and posts; it is sold as seen and is the wrong grade for feed.

Capella, postcode 4723, belongs in the same phone call. A homestead pad and an outstation pad can be two different tracks under one property name. Price the harder one properly rather than discover it is a second journey.

Spray chemical on a cropping place follows the same logic as on a cane farm, even though the crop is grain: a bunded shell, away from seed and away from the house, with the class named when you ring.

Tracks, clay, and making the trip count

Do stations around Clermont get a delivery?

Yes, as part of the Bowen Basin runs from Mackay. The track, the grids, the gates and the creek crossings need to be described so the truck and the route are confirmed before dispatch.

How should it sit on black soil?

On solid supports under the corners, ideally over a compacted gravel pad. The clay swells and shrinks, and a frame set straight on it can twist until the doors will not shut.

Is a second container on the same truck worth asking about?

Often, because the haul is a bigger share of the cost than it is closer to Mackay. We can price one unit and two so the comparison is yours.
