Edge of the city

The first thing on a new Walkerston block

Walkerston sits just west of Mackay on the Peak Downs Highway, and it has become one of the places people buy a few acres without leaving the city behind. Often the container is the first structure on the lot: the slab is not down, the rental is ending, and the tools have to go somewhere that locks.

Bought the acres, nowhere to put the gear

The pattern is repetitive and specific. The block is purchased. The house is a set of plans. Materials, a generator, the contents of a rental garage — none of it has a home. A container arrives, does that job through the build, and usually remains as the mower shed or the workshop once the keys are handed over.

The highway also draws small transport and mining-services operators who want a yard outside the industrial estate. They use the same steel as a secure store on rural-residential land. Walkerston is 4751. Alexandra, Racecourse, Te Kowai and Bakers Creek, closer to town, are 4740. Pleystowe is 4741 and Balnagowan is 4740.

New fill, and a builder who still needs the pad

Access on a fresh acreage lot is usually generous. The ground is the catch. Cleared or filled pads stay soft after rain, and tipping onto new fill leaves ruts the earthworks then have to fix. If the house pad is being prepared, put the container on ground that has already settled, somewhere the concrete truck, the frame delivery and the scaffold will not need.

Talk to the builder before the spot is chosen. Close enough that materials are not carried the length of the block, and clear of the septic, the tank pad and the power trench. On established acreage the usual limits apply: a straight approach, width through the gate, firm ground, open sky. A tilt-tray covers most of these jobs. A sidelifter is for a forty, and only where there is room to work beside the truck. The access guide linked below is the checklist we actually use.

Close enough to share a town truck

Walkerston often rides with Mackay suburb drops. The container leaves The Leap on that run and is set down on the block. Come and see it there, or ask for the serial pictures, before it heads out the highway.

A twenty-footer is the size most acreage owners start with: household overflow during the build, then the ride-on and the trailer gear. If you already know it will be a workshop, a high cube gives headroom for a bench you can stand at. Turning one into a studio or a secondary dwelling is possible and it is a building, not a storage idea — Mackay Regional Council and a certifier, local wind rating included. The homes guide on the blog is the frank version. Hire suits a build with an end date; if you already know the box is staying, buying at the start usually costs less. As-is stock is sold as seen and is not the grade for furniture that has to stay dry through a wet-season build.

Treat the container as a permanent obstacle once the house exists. If it sits in the only flat turning area, every truck after the build will curse it. Along a side boundary, doors facing into the block, usually ages better.

Highway frontage means dust. A few metres back from the fence is kinder to the door gear than a box on the boundary where every road train throws grit at the seals.

Building sites and what stays after

Where should it go while the house is being built?

On settled ground the concrete truck, frame truck and scaffold will not need, and clear of future septic, tanks and service trenches. Ask the builder before the day.

Hire for the build, then keep it?

Yes. If you decide to keep the hired unit, a buy-out can be priced on the box already sitting there, so it does not have to be swapped.

Which truck turns up on acreage here?

A tilt-tray for tens and twenties, a sidelifter for a forty. Pictures of the gate and the pad confirm it.
