Getting a container onto an Airlie hillside
Airlie earns its living from the water, and a lot of the steel we bring here is storing sails, dive gear and spare outboards a street or two back from the foreshore, because space on the water is scarce. The rest is builders on steep blocks, and holiday houses that need a lock between visits.
Marinas, builds, and houses that sit empty midweek
Charter boats, dive schools and tour operators around the marinas burn through sails, regulators, spare motors and safety gear. A container on a lot off the waterfront is often the only store that is both affordable and lockable. Builders on the hills above Cannonvale and through Jubilee Pocket need the same lock for the length of a house, because there is nowhere else on a steep site to leave materials. Holiday-home owners add the third group: kayaks, rods and outdoor furniture that should not live on a deck through the week.

Switchbacks, walls, and a crane more often than people hope
Many streets climb straight off Shute Harbour Road. Driveways switch back, retaining walls eat the flat ground, and a tilt-tray wants a reasonably level place to slide a box onto. On a steep lot the practical answer is often a crane truck, lifting over a wall or down onto a pad. That costs more than a slide-off, so it needs to be known when the price is given, not when the driver is already in second gear.
Overhead is the other Airlie trap: mature trees, road wires, and balconies that hang across the drive. Along the main strip and near the marinas, the truck also needs somewhere to stand that is not the tour-bus lane. Three pictures — street, drive, pad — tell us which machine to send. The Airlie unit is released from The Leap after you have walked it or seen the serial shots, and the hill is the reason that choice is made before a truck is pointed north.
Salt on the steel, damp in the air
Salt works on any scratch you leave. Keep the paint whole, treat chips early, and do not let leaf litter sit on the roof holding moisture. Door seals and hinges want a look now and then. Inside, the trouble is condensation: warm humid air meets cool steel overnight and drips on whatever you stored. Vents help. So does keeping sails, cushions and other fabric off the floor and clear of the walls. A closed box in this climate is not a cupboard.
On a tight or steep lot a ten-footer is often the only length that can be put down sensibly, and it is light enough for a smaller crane. A twenty suits a flat pad with a clear run. Forties belong with marine businesses that have sidelifter room. School holidays change the street, not the slope. A truck that could stand quietly in May can be stuck behind parked cars in September. If the only approach is the main road, say which month you need the lift and whether a neighbour's drive can be borrowed for a few minutes. Tour buses are not something we will block to save a booking.

How do I slow the rust this close to the water?
Keep paint intact, treat scratches early, clear the roof, and sit the container on supports so air moves underneath. Bare steel near salt does not stay bare for long.
Will gear stay dry through a Whitsunday summer?
Rain from above is what a cargo-worthy unit is built to keep out. Humid air can still condense inside. Vents, and keeping fabric off the steel, do more than any slogan.
